The programme will support the entry into service of the new Class 99 locomotives.

GB Railfreight (GBRf) will introduce spatial computing for operational training from March 2026 under a three-year agreement with 3D platform provider JigSpace.

Using the JigSpace app and Apple Vision Pro, GBRf will train drivers on cab layout and key components in a full-scale 360° virtual environment before accessing a physical locomotive. The system allows trainees to carry out a virtual walk-around, interacting with interior and exterior elements.

GBRf said the approach will reduce the need for travel to its Peterborough Training School, with projected savings of more than GBP 500,000 (approximately EUR 585,000) over two years. The operator will deploy the technology initially for Class 99 familiarisation, with later phases covering train preparation procedures and component-specific modules.

The Class 99 locomotives are due to enter service on the UK network, with the immersive training intended to provide crews with advance technical knowledge before fleet introduction.
