Over 511 million passengers travelled by bus and train in Austria in 2024.

With more than half a billion passengers for the first time, ÖBB recorded an absolute passenger record in 2024. Never before have so many people travelled by bus and train in Austria. In 2023, there were 494 million passengers.

‘The passenger record with more than 511 million travellers on ÖBB clearly shows that the trend towards bus and rail continues. That is why we are consistently expanding our services and investing a record sum of over 6.1 billion euros in new and modern trains by 2030. A total of around 330 new trains will be coming onto the rails,’ explains ÖBB CEO Andreas Matthä.

In 2024, there were a total of 254.3 million passengers in local and regional transport, 10% more than in 2023. The increase is due, on the one hand, to the fact that working from home has been scaled back again and, on the other hand, to the increased use of bus and rail for tourist excursions.

Long-distance transport remained stable in 2024 with 46 million passengers compared to 2023, despite the restrictions during the storms in autumn. Compared to 2019, ÖBB has seen a whopping increase of 7.8 million passengers – that means an increase of over 20% in long-distance transport in five years.
